November 15, 2007 | 07:00 CET | Categories: General press releases | Non regulatory

For the fifth year in a row, the European Hotel Design Awards were awarded at the SLEEP hotel design event in central London. This year’s environmental award, The Sustainability Award, was yesterday awarded to Scandic for the chain’s significant contribution to environment and sustainability. The SLEEP annual European hotel design event in London attracts hotel owners, interior designers, building contractors and others working in the hotel industry. Ten awards were handed out yesterday to reward companies that distinguish themselves within architecture, technology, innovation and environment. Scandic’s Sustainability Manager Jan Peter Bergkvist was there to accept the prestigious Sustainability Award.
“Scandic has had a strong environmental focus in the past ten years. Our aim has always been for other sector players to follow us and make the hotel industry leading in the area of environment. It therefore feels important, and naturally very pleasing, for our environmental and sustainability efforts to be rewarded at such a prestigious event like SLEEP,” he says.
Scandic’s environmental work, which also includes rationalising resource use in a number of areas, has paid off. Between 1996 and 2006 the hotel chain reduced its fossil fuel CO2 emissions by 30 per cent. Every guest who spends a night at Scandic emits 1.5kg less CO2, uses 35 litres less water and leaves 1kg less unsorted waste than ten years ago.

Scandic Anglais, a model example
One of the hotels considered by the jury when Scandic was declared winner was the Scandic Anglais in central Stockholm, which after an extensive revamp in 2006 has become the chain’s flagship. The renovation work carefully followed Scandic’s standard for ecologically sustainable hotel design. The standard guarantees that all building and renovation within Scandic causes the least possible environmental impact.
