The Helsinki Vantaa Airport is buzzing. The number of travelers passing through the gates is increasing every year. In 2016 the figure exceeded 17 million. Many of the passengers are flying to, or arriving from, destinations in Asia. The airport has become a veritable hub for these flights. And the need for close overnight accommodation at the airport is rocketing.
A perfect fit for Scandic
With nine hotels in the Helsinki region, Scandic is well established in this strategic region. But a Scandic airport hotel has been missing in the portfolio and has been high on the wish list. The agreement in January with LAK Real Estate (a subsidiary of Finnavia) to establish and operate a new hotel close to the airport was therefore a perfect fit.
Almost in the terminal
Scandic Helsinki Airport, as the new hotel will be branded, is scheduled to open in the first half of 2018. The property currently houses offices and used to be the head office of Finnair. Three floors of the building are now undergoing extensive renovations to transform it into a modern, comfortable hotel with 148 rooms to begin with.
Scandic Helsinki Airport will be a well-located full-service hotel, just 100 metres from terminal 2. It will comprise five conference rooms, the biggest with a capacity to accommodate up to 50 people. Furthermore, there is a fully-fledged restaurant (eagerly awaited as a lunchroom for people working at the airport), a bar and a gym with a sauna.
“A valuable addition”
Says Aki Käyhkö, Head of Scandic Hotels in Finland: “We have been working closely together with the property owner LAK for a couple of years. Together with them we will share the financing of the renovation of this hotel, which is expected to take one year. It will be a valuable addition to our Finnish portfolio of hotels. With its unique location just a stone’s throw from the terminal, I’m confident that it will be a popular stay for air travelers to and from Helsinki Airport”.
