Each hotel guest uses 209 litres of water a day

The Scandic hotel chain has been measuring water consumption at its hotels since 1996. Back then, each guest used 240 litres of water per day; now that figure is down to 209 litres. This is lower than is required for Scandic’s hotels to be approved under the Nordic Swan ecolabelling scheme.Stockholm, 6 September 2010

As part of World Water Week (http://www.worldwaterweek.org/about) in Stockholm on 5-11 September, Scandic is focusing even more closely on its water (http://www.scandichotels.com/en/settings/Side-foot/About-us-Container/Responsible-living/Environmental/At-the-hotel/Our-own-water/). In order to consume no more water than is necessary and to maintain water quality, Scandic has introduced the following:

–          low-flush toilets

–          energy-efficient shower heads

–          wash basins with sensors

–          efficient dishwashers and washing machines

–          low dosing and ecolabelled products (http://www.scandichotels.com/settings/Side-foot/About-us-Container/Responsible-living/Environmental/At-the-hotel/Running-a-hotel/) for cleaning and washing up. Steam cleaning is used in many of our hotels.

Scandic has also replaced bottled water, which used to travel huge distances to our restaurants, with our own carbonated and filtered water, dispensed into bottles made from recycled glass.

Scandic is one of the founders of the international Stockholm Water Prize (http://www.siwi.org/), which this year is being awarded to Dr Rita Colwell, professor at the University of Maryland and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the USA, for her research, which has led to a way of preventing the spread of cholera via water. This has the potential to save millions of lives.
