Vaasa is located in the fastest growing economic area in Finland. The development is driven by a cluster of industries working in the forefront of the energy business. Not very surprising, Scandic has been eager to establish its presence in the city. “Large corporate customers has actually been pushing us to do so”, says Aki Käyhkö who is heading Scandic’s Finnish operations. “But we’ve been patient to wait for the right opportunity. This year it finally arrived”.
On June 7th, Scandic Vaasa opened for business. The former Hotel Kantarellis had then been transformed into the well-proven Scandic concept. Management was new. The team working at the hotel was new. And the first redecorations of the hotel interiors had been completed during a hectic six week period. The first guests were welcomed the Scandic way.
“Obviously, this was an appreciated addition to the choice of hotels in the town. We started with full occupancy from the very beginning”, says Aki Käyhkö. “This goes in line with our ambition to be seen as the leading business hotel in Vaasa. But this is just the start”.
Presently, the hotel offers 70 rooms. “This size is actually too small to call Scandic Vaasa a fully-fledged business hotel. Also, to run a truly profitable business according Scandic’s targets you really need to double the size of the hotel. So, we’ve made an agreement with the property owner to expand capacity with another 70 rooms. We are also planning for the provision of extended conference facilities for our corporate customers”, continues Aki Käyhkö.
“Building plans are underway and our target is to have everything completed and up-and-running in 2018. Scandic Vaasa is our 28th hotel in Finland. I’m happy that we finally have been able to introduce our brand to this vibrant part of the country as well. The hotel strengthens our position in the marketplace. Our guests expect to find us in the most important cities”.
